I’m gen-x and my grandpa was born in 1909. He promptly shut my argument down, and reminded me to have empathy for people and their stories and to not be so dismissive of the ugliness of history. I really credit that particular conversation with him as the catalyst that made me think of other people before forming an opinion on things, regardless of whether I’m directly affected by their situations or not. My grandpa was awesome. This was a man who farmed and did other manual labor all his life (literally into his 70s) to put food on the table and pay bills. Neither he nor my grandma graduated school (I believe he went til the 8th grade and my grandma until the 3rd when she had to quit to help her family raise her younger siblings…imagine that for a second….8 years old). They were two of the best people I’ve ever known. How is it that someone who was born in 1909 and racially isolated his whole life had a more accurate viewpoint of US history than the people who are pushing this bullshit? I have been arguing that people are underestimating his electability for a Texashumor 1 35 Construction Crew Tee Shirt. Trump won by being more charismatic than a few extremely boring old men. That is not an achievement. Trump is not a good orator, he is often incoherent and cruel, and he loses track of his statements literally almost every time he opens his mouth. He looks like a weirdo, has a terrible sense of fashion, and mostly spends all his time talking about how awesome he is and how everyone who doesn’t like him is evil. That is not charisma, it is a malignant narcissist doing what one does. The fact that people are interpreting that as charisma is because they want to. The concept of him being compelling comes simply from the fact that he often says the quiet part out loud. They wanted someone to “hurt the right people” and he fills that need for them, so they post-hoc reinterpret everything about him in a messianic lens unrelated to his actual skills or behavior. This is the man he is. This is what they see. And that is not even the most extreme version, some literally portray him as Jesus in king form. So it does not matter what DeSantis does or how he acts. If he ends up being the front runner they will all jump behind him, reinterpret him, and start calling him “A highly intelligent, strong willed hero who did not let red tape stop him from protecting this country!” The reality is that the only requirement is that you pander to their biases and prejudices. Nothing else matters. You do not even need to help them or make their lives better, you can actively make them much worse, but as long as you hurt the “right people” worse, they will love you.
