Bravo for the funny and informative write up! I don’t have the time or money to be an The Pennsylvania State University Penn State Behrend Custom Ugly Christmas Sweater(and catching up on decades of history is daunting), but when I heard that Ultimates spiraled into one of the worst comics ever, I had to read it. Ultimates 1 and 2? Pretty great! I liked them a lot. Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum? Permanently burned into my brain in a really bad way. I’m surprised you didn’t link to a picture of Dr. Strange’s death. It’s up there with Wasp and Blob as All Time Bad Panels for me. I’ve been reading The Boys lately, and it has me thinking more about the end of the Ultimate Universe in that they’re both dark and gratuitous. The Boys, at least, is clearly trying to make a statement with all its sex and violence and darkness (power corrupts when left unchecked, metaphor for the nuclear arms race, etc.). I don’t think Jeph Loeb had anything he was trying to say with Ultimatum. He was just very hurt and took it out on beloved characters.

The next day, I got another box of the same size, and a second email saying, “Your package has been delivered,” with the contents indicated as another litter box. Litter boxes have large dimensions, but are hollow, and therefore very light, so there was nothing unusual about the second box’s weight. I didn’t open the box because I figured I would just slap a return label on it and send it back or something. Messaged Chewy, told them I got an extra litter box in the mail. They told me to donate it. Cool! Called the local SPCA to donate it, they were excited. Opened the box to take it over, and it was an entire 2’x2’x2’ box just filled with brown paper. No litter box. So I bought a litter box to donate because I’d already told them I’d bring it over. But yeah, Chewy paid to ship me a giant box full of packing paper.

Setting aside all the reveals about fake history, etc, I don’t have an issue with Magneto being written as someone who would genocide despite his being a holocaust survivor – because that’s who Magneto has been in all continuities. He’s someone who saw the worst of humanity, said “never again”, but took the wrong lesson from it. He didn’t mean “never again allow a genocide”, but “never again allow these beings that are lesser then me be the ones doing the extermination “. He’s tried over and over to eliminate all humans in favor of mutants. He might be around to being a generally good guy at the moment, but I actually like the idea of a villain that is a villain because of the trauma of his youth and learned the wrong thing.
