As Ultimate comics went on, some of its flaws became more evident. First, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team Logo Personalized Ugly Christmas Sweater, Ugly Sweater, Christmas Sweaters, Hoodie, Sweatshirt, Sweater Ultimate comics had tried to get away from convoluted canon, but after 8 years of material, the cycle had begun again. It wasn’t anywhere near as bad as the main Marvel universe, but the bloat was building up, which translated into lower sales. Another big issue was that (shocking) continuing to keep award winning writing is really hard, especially when the original writers aren’t writing anymore. New writers tried to mimic what earlier creators had done, without understanding any of the meaning behind it. Earlier comics had complex discussions on the nature of violence, and the role sex played in human relationships. And then trying desperately to mimic that, you had got a bunch of gratuitous porn masquerading as being “mature storytelling”, often with some pretty creepy behavior. Comic books are… not exactly known for their realistic depictions of womens bodies, or giving female heroes normal costumes, but Ultimate comics had some exceptionally bad examples. There was also a whole plotline in Ultimates 3 about Tony and Natasha’s sex tape getting leaked, which was shown in graphic detail. The writer for Ultimates 3, as well as the mind of Ultimatum was Jeph Loeb, who will be a very important player in all this. Suffice to say, Loeb’s takeover of the Ultimates (and later the whole universe) was… not great. He was a pretty well regarded writer, who was brought in to try and recreate the success of Marvel’s “mature, semi-grounded” heroes after the original writers left. Unfortunately, he had terrible big picture ideas and somehow even worse execution, leading to stilted (or downright stupid) dialogue. It has the vibe of an edgy fanfic, with boobs and blood shoved in so you know it’s a big boy story. There were also some… less than ideal choices? Black Panther, one of Marvel’s most iconic black superheroes literally had his voice taken away, and was functionally a slave for a while. Oh, and also, he was Captain America the whole time? It was weird.

Firstly, the taste between Diet Drinks and Regular Drinks are vastly different. Diet tastes less sugary and sweet overall, and lacks that sugar aftertaste that Regular Drinks have. So the chance of a diabetic drinking more than a sip or two of Regular is slim to none. Secondly, even if you do somehow mix the tastes up and accidentally drink down most/all of the Regular, you can still correct for the Soda with an extra shot of insulin (you can find nutritional guides for fast food sodas online, which includes the Carbohydrates of the Soda). Now, you won’t feel good waiting for your insulin to fix the accident. But you’ll make it through fine and go back to doing your regular day stuff. Really, the only horrific thing about getting my drinks mixed, is knowing I’ll either have to go get my soda replaced with a Diet, or having to forgo my drink if I’m too far away from the restaurant.

Really interesting to read about how popular and beloved Ultimates was initially. I got into comics maybe 5 years post-Ultimatum and pretty much everywhere I went looking for advice for newbie comic readers said not to bother with it. They mostly had a Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team Logo Personalized Ugly Christmas Sweater, Ugly Sweater, Christmas Sweaters, Hoodie, Sweatshirt, Sweater of “you can read it if you want, it was pretty influential on the MCU, but it’s way too edgy for no reason… Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are in an incestuous relationship… I wouldn’t bother.” Ultimate Spidey’s been the only one I’ve seen recommended consistently. Even when people would just rec their favorite line ups of the Avengers or X Men Ultimate Spidey usually got a friendly mention, since being one guy there’s a LOT of Spidey to go through, probably more effected by the continuity lockout issue than any other single character. The change there has been that I’ve seen it generally pitched as at worst decent on its own merits and definitely worth a read for Spidey fans instead of what I was seeing pre Secret Wars, where it would kind of be talked about as the coward’s solution to Spider-man reading intimidation, good if you have a kid sibling who likes the character but not for us REAL comic buffs who read 8000 issues even the ones published as free coloring books in cereal boxes or whatever. Miles is at least 50% responsible for that, even people who generally disdained Ultimates by that point were excited about his debut. Even when people list out most of Ultimate Spider-man, since if you want Miles’ story there isn’t THAT much Peter ahead of it all things considered, those rec lists tend to have a noticeable gap around Ultimatum, though. I’ve seen a few that include the single issues you mention about mourning him, basically with “He was dead, then he wasn’t, doesn’t matter, good issue though” in the notes.
