We have a friend who gets this kind of New York Giants Christmas Ugly Sweater for her article writing side gig. (She does it for fun and doesn’t need the money or anything from it). So recently she’s gotten a ton of amazing things from Bethesda/Zenimax for ESO. Custom Terrariums with custom wood burning, all the new expacs and premium currencies for free, awesome experiences with the devs running around new dungeons they’ve added to the game, an Elder Scrolls themed banquet with the dev team, and other stuff I’m probably not remembering It’s super neat and they don’t expect her to post online about any of it at all. She basically just writes her article, and if the marketing part of their company enjoys how she writes she gets invited to write more articles about new features coming to the game and sometimes gets to interview the devs about it. But all the little extra gifts and stuff have literally just been that~ gifts and a way to keep good communication and appreciation between the game studios and article writers they enjoy working with. She’s even said negative things about ESO but they keep coming back to her with fun opportunities. Gifts like this seem to be more about keeping good literal Personal Relations (not the bribery kind) rather than hoping the article writer will post their Microsoft chocolate Xbox online

I think an aspect that fuels this idea of a New York Giants Christmas Ugly Sweater or fomo or the economy of dating is online dating and the general assumptions around it. If people just remembered that if they met that same number of people that sat (they saw* edit) and swiped on one night say at a subway station during rush hour IRL you aren’t gonna match and have chemistry with hundreds of people just because you see their face/profile etc and approach them all.
