Bravo for the funny and informative write up! I don’t have the time or money to be an LSU Tigers Star Wars Ugly Christmas Sweater(and catching up on decades of history is daunting), but when I heard that Ultimates spiraled into one of the worst comics ever, I had to read it. Ultimates 1 and 2? Pretty great! I liked them a lot. Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum? Permanently burned into my brain in a really bad way. I’m surprised you didn’t link to a picture of Dr. Strange’s death. It’s up there with Wasp and Blob as All Time Bad Panels for me. I’ve been reading The Boys lately, and it has me thinking more about the end of the Ultimate Universe in that they’re both dark and gratuitous. The Boys, at least, is clearly trying to make a statement with all its sex and violence and darkness (power corrupts when left unchecked, metaphor for the nuclear arms race, etc.). I don’t think Jeph Loeb had anything he was trying to say with Ultimatum. He was just very hurt and took it out on beloved characters.

This actually reminds me of an old friend of a LSU Tigers Star Wars Ugly Christmas Sweater. It was at a friend’s party many years ago, and his friend was diabetic. He drank a rather large quantity of alcohol, had some hot dogs, and followed it with dessert. He started going into a daze and was near passing out on the couch. Luckily, he brought his insulin and I was already well into nursing school. I drew the correct dosage to administer and he was fine in about twenty minutes. It turns out that this idiot had a habit of doing things like this. He would regularly eat several donuts or honey buns at work and then take some insulin after. He was in rough shape for a long time. I don’t know what happened to him, but I doubt he could have afforded insulin like that today.

I get that. When I was reading the LSU Tigers Star Wars Ugly Christmas Sweater, I expected him to stay at the house with the kind stranger and ride out the rest of the storm with him and the man he rescued. My heart fell to my boots when he immediately turned around to walk home in those conditions after already having made such an effort. I was not surprised he struggled so hard in the last stages. My heart was beating overtime reading it. It’s very lucky he didn’t die. I understand completely the driving instinct to get home, to be home. From a rescue, snow-safety, blizzard-aware point of view, having your intellect override your instincts to tell you: this is not normal; home is not close at all in these conditions, it’s better to stay here – that cold and determined intellectual capacity to override our normal social reluctance to ask a stranger to take us in, would have been the difference between life and death for a lot of people. He made it home and I am so grateful. A lot of people couldn’t have been able to make it. From the description his concern was the snow caked onto his clothes melting. Getting wet turns nicely insulating layers into worse-than-not-having-them-at-all layers, which he wanted to avoid at all costs given the windchill values outside. If worse conditions were to come – the snow and drifts would only be getting deeper after all, and surely there was a good chance of the power going out at any time – then I’d understand wanting to make sure he was back home with his girlfriend for that rather than being stuck at someone else’s house for an unknown period of time.
