I read the entire new standards document and could not find any place where it said that slavery brought “personal benefit” to Black people. BUT…all of the Frog Week Flood The Gap Harrisonburg Virginia Shirt attempts to normalized slavery and remove any moral context. For example they added things like a requirement to teach about global slavery that existed then, and how slavery still exists now. They specifically require teaching about the Asian slavery that existed in the same time frame as American slavery, and this is literally saying “everyone did it” and if not an outright defense of American slavery it is clearly an excuse for it. Likewise requiring it to be taught that some Native American tribes enslaved other Native Americans, noting that slavery existed when White people arrived which significantly dilutes the context of how European American slavery came to exist and was propagated. There are several parts added that require the teaching of the economic justifications for slavery, and others are just plain flat-out myth making lies, like that the framers of the Constitution built into the document by design mechanisms for the abolishment of slavery, and also suggest that none of the framers wanted slavery but it was just the world that existed at the time (the “necessary evil” argument). They also cobble together several other things as well, such as requiring learning about European serfdom and implying this was the natural precursor to American slavery in an attempt to shift the blame to the British for laying the foundation for chattel slavey. The general throughline for most of the changes is to push the narrative that slavery was “done” to America, and not that Americans themselves were responsible for slavery.
