Nothing sums up 00’s era writing in any medium more than this line. Everything just seemed to be going to shit so quickly from the 90’s and it was rough for people who went from 90’s teens/young adults to hitting adulthood in that era. So for them, that level of shocking grimdark was what they felt reality was like, because reality in the 00’s was pretty fucked up when that was your first taste of the adult world. That’s my take at least, and why this kind of shock value and grimdark writing was so popular in that era, with lots of terrible decisions by companies to chase that trend, incredibly poorly more often than not.

This actually reminds me of an old friend of a Florida State Seminoles Custom Name & Number Ugly Christmas Sweater. It was at a friend’s party many years ago, and his friend was diabetic. Really interesting to read about how popular and beloved Ultimates was initially. I got into comics maybe 5 years post-Ultimatum and pretty much everywhere I went looking for advice for newbie comic readers said not to bother with it. The change there has been that I’ve seen it generally pitched as at worst decent on its own merits and definitely worth a read for Spidey fans instead of what I was seeing pre Secret Wars, where it would kind of be talked about as the coward’s solution to Spider-man reading intimidation, good if you have a kid sibling who likes the character but not for us REAL comic buffs who read 8000 issues even the ones published as free coloring books in cereal boxes or whatever. Miles is at least 50% responsible for that, even people who generally disdained Ultimates by that point were excited about his debut. Even when people list out most of Ultimate Spider-man, since if you want Miles’ story there isn’t THAT much Peter ahead of it all things considered, those rec lists tend to have a noticeable gap around Ultimatum, though. I’ve seen a few that include the single issues you mention about mourning him, basically with “He was dead, then he wasn’t, doesn’t matter, good issue though” in the notes.
