I’m gen-x and my grandpa was born in 1909. Me, being a little kid and thinking I sounded smart (I wasn’t), said something to the effect of, “Yeah, but if it weren’t for slavery, black people wouldn’t be here.” I bought into “the greatest country on earth” thing that has been forcefed to us since kindergarten, so my opinion was that those people were lucky in a round about way. I was playing devil’s advocate and trying to think of the positives, if there were any to be had. He promptly shut my argument down, and reminded me to have empathy for people and their stories and to not be so dismissive of the ugliness of history. I really credit that particular conversation with him as the catalyst that made me think of other people before forming an opinion on things, regardless of whether I’m directly affected by their situations or not. My grandpa was awesome. This was a man who farmed and did other manual labor all his life (literally into his 70s) to put food on the table and pay bills. Neither he nor my grandma graduated school (I believe he went til the 8th grade and my grandma until the 3rd when she had to quit to help her family raise her younger siblings…imagine that for a second….8 years old). They were two of the best people I’ve ever known. How is it that someone who was born in 1909 and racially isolated his whole life had a more accurate viewpoint of US history than the people who are pushing this bullshit? I’ll never forget this because I rarely snap at someone but when he heard the feedback he said “f——- n——— always a trying to get shit for free” I lost my goddamn mind on this person. Buyer was absolutely influential and a close friend of and provided feedback that really helped me throughout my career — an exemplary human being. I made sure that was fucking known. The sad bit. I can tell you about quite a few more experiences. Never heard this shit so frequently in my life until I lived in the south.
