Delores, at ten weeks old, was quickly getting integrated into the Christmas Ugly Sweater of the flock. Because these six little chicks started out in an aquarium with a heat lamp in my study, then moved to a large hamster cage, then finally outside in a cage kept inside the barn, the grown chickens had all slowly acclimated to seeing Delores and his sisters. However, the first few times I put the babies in the open with the hens, I cautiously supervised the meeting. There was blustering and a little pushing by the big chickens – similar to what you might see on a junior high playground the first week of school – but nothing too severe. Once when the largest hen, Joan Crawford, pulled at Delores’s tail, he ran to me and flew into my arms – but when I scolded Joan and she stalked off to pout, Delores was brave enough to go back and try again. The pecking order shook out fairly easily within a couple days, with Delores towards the middle.

Its increasingly harder to get the NFL to commit to what a CATCH actually is (a TD in Chicago can be called a non catch in Seattle, even though the same exact type of Christmas Ugly Sweater catch was made). The main reason for this, the NFL does not hire FULL TIME officials. These are men (and now women) with other jobs that while they are fully trained, do not do this full time as their main work. Further more, NFL officials work together as teams during the regular season. The Playoffs for Referees is just like for the rest of the NFL..the best of the best get to join in. That means you have Line Judges from one team mixed with Referees from another team, because those two people graded the highest during the season, and their reward is.. to ref the playoffs…and Super Bowl. A lot can be said about team chemistry, and how well a Christmas Ugly Sweater team works together. Well keep that in the Officiating too please NFL. Pick the best TEAMS and keep them together in the NFL.

Christmas decorations are a Christmas Ugly Sweater affectation. Whether one puts them up or doesn’t put them up, whether one leaves them up or takes them down, whether they are put up in January or any other time before December, has no impact on the superstition defined as luck. Good luck and bad luck are merely characterizations of serendipitous occurrences that are random in nature but which leave us either going hooray (good luck) or lamenting the vagaries of uncaring nature (bad luck). But worrying about or praying about or hoping for either as the case may be, like astrology for example, is simply superstitious dreck. As a native yo the city I must say there are three a places that I would suggest to visitors to really get the best holiday scene amd spirit. My first pick is going to be Westfield Mall’s extended outdoor shopping area Union Square. Located at the corner of Powell and Geary in the heart of downtown San Francisco the Christmas spirit is reminiscent of the movie “A Miracle on 24th Street”. That is minus the snow.
