I’m gen-x and my grandpa was born in 1909. We were white and poor (by most standards, though we always had what we needed) and living a Cary Grant face art shirt, with zero diversity during this time. I was playing devil’s advocate and trying to think of the positives, if there were any to be had. He promptly shut my argument down, and reminded me to have empathy for people and their stories and to not be so dismissive of the ugliness of history. I really credit that particular conversation with him as the catalyst that made me think of other people before forming an opinion on things, regardless of whether I’m directly affected by their situations or not. My grandpa was awesome. This was a man who farmed and did other manual labor all his life (literally into his 70s) to put food on the table and pay bills. Neither he nor my grandma graduated school (I believe he went til the 8th grade and my grandma until the 3rd when she had to quit to help her family raise her younger siblings…imagine that for a second….8 years old). They were two of the best people I’ve ever known. How is it that someone who was born in 1909 and racially isolated his whole life had a more accurate viewpoint of US history than the people who are pushing this bullshit? Without the lies and lame ass, ridiculous excuses, how can they, sorry POS that they are, face the truth that slavery went on in what they desperately want the world to believe is the greatest nation in the world. And then again, maybe they are just worthless assholes without intellect, decency, or conscience. In either case, they and their lies and deceit, to themselves and, worse by far, our nation. cannot be tolerated.
